Meaning of Zodiac Signs

The path on which the sun, the moon, and the planets travel is known as the ecliptic. During the travel they pass through 13 constellations which are known as the stars of the Zodiac. 12 of these constellations are used by astrologers as signs of the Zodiac to foretell the future. Those who study the Zodiac signs are known as astrologers. Astrologers look at charts and predict our day-to- day future.

It is believed that it was in Mesopotamia where the term ‘zodiac signs’ was coined. There are 12 zodiac signs or ‘sun signs’ as they are known in popular parlance. These signs, created about 2000 years ago, are based on the concepts inherited by Hellenistic astronomy and Babylonian astronomy of the Chaldean period. They indicate at what coordinates the sun was, at the time of the birth of a person.

Every zodiac sign is regulated by a planet. While Saturn is the regulatory planet of Capricorn and Aquarius, Jupiter regulates Pisces and Sagittarius, Mars regulates Aries and Scorpion, Venus regulates Taurus and Libra and Mercury regulates Gemini and Virgo. Cancer and Leo are regulated by the Moon and the Sun.

While tropical zodiac is followed in the West, sidereal zodiac is favourite among the people in the East. The difference between the tropical zodiac and sidereal zodiac is that while the former is fixed to the seasons, the latter is fixed to constellations.

Aries (21st March - 20th April)

Symbolized by the ram, Aries is the first sign of the zodiac and ruled by planet Mars. Those belonging to Aries zodiac sign are enthusiastic individuals full of energy, confidence, courage and vitality. As far as negative traits associated with the Aries are concerned they can be selfish and ruthless. They are best compatible with Leo and Sagittarius and least compatible with Scorpio and Virgo.

Taurus (21st April - 21st May)

Symbolized by the bull Taurus is the second sign of the zodiac and ruled by planet Venus. People born under the sign are extremely practical, patient, caring and reliable. Their determination and practicality stand them in good stead in becoming successful in life. On the darker side Taureans can be extremely inflexible, stubborn and lazy. They are best compatible with people having Virgo and Capricorn signs and least compatible with those belonging to Libra and Sagittarius.

Gemini (22nd May - 21st June)

Ruled by planet Mercury, Gemini is the third zodiac sign and is symbolized by the Twins Pollux and Castor. People belonging to Gemini are intelligent, communicative, and versatile. Geminis are full of fun and wit. Negative traits of Gemini include fickle mindedness. They are compatible with Aquarians and Libras and least compatible with Scorpios and Capricorns.

Cancer (22nd June - 22nd July)

Symbolized by a crab, Cancer is the fourth sign of the zodiac and is ruled by the moon. People belonging to the zodiac sign are emotional, sympathetic and loving by nature. On the darker side they can become overly emotional sometimes. They are best compatible with people born under the zodiac signs of Scorpio and Pisces and least compatible with Sagittarius and Aquarius. 

Leo (23rd July - 23rd August)

Symbolized by the lion the Leo is the fifth sign of the zodiac and ruled by the Sun. Those born under the sign are charismatic, bright, generous, faithful, and loyal by nature but bossy. Leos are best compatible with people born under the zodiac signs of Aries and Sagittarius and least compatible with Capricorn and Pisces. 

Virgo (23rd August - 23rd September)

Virgo, the sixth sign of the zodiac, is symbolized by a maiden and ruled by the mercury. As can be gauged from the symbol, the Virgos are shy, modest and practical and have analytical bent of mind. Libra (24th September - 24th October)

Ruled by Venus, Libra is the seventh sign of the zodiac and symbolized by the scales. Librans are considered diplomatic and romantic in nature. Lack of firmness is the negative trait that is associated with them. They are best compatible with Geminis and Aquarius and least compatible with Taurus and Pisces.

Scorpio (24th October - 22nd November)

Symbolized by the scorpion, Scorpio, the eighth sign of the zodiac is ruled by Mars. Apart from being intelligent and emotional, Scorpios are a determined lot. However, they are often criticized for being jealous. They are best compatible with Pisces, Cancer and least compatible with Aries and Geminis.

Sagittarius (23rd November - 21st December)

The Sagittarius, the ninth sign of the zodiac, is ruled by Jupiter and symbolized by the archer. People born under the sign are full of adventure, fun, and intelligence. They can sometimes turn philosophical. However, carelessness and impatience are their biggest weaknesses. Capricorn (22nd December - 20th January)
